Singular Architecture

This section was achieved thanks to documents from UNESCO and those made available at Heritage House.

One of the main architectural characteristics of Luang Prabang is the enormous quantity of monasteries present in the town. In the XVIIIth century, there were 65 monasteries.Today, there are about thirty in more or less good condition, of which 22 are in the protected zone.

The extreme diversity in the architectural patrimony of Luang Prabang is one of the main attractions. The blending of traditional architecture with certain foreign influences to which the town has been subjected over the years, is one of its riches.

The strength of Laotian architecture enabled it to continue and even integrate any outside contributions. The charm radiating from Louang Prabang comes from the association of :
- local or colonial civil architecture, of which Luang Prabang still maintains numerous exceptional buildings intact,
- religious architecture, of which the buildings are the town’s most ancient legacy,
- the iconography and the statues

Heritage House, situated on the point of the peninsular, has several duties in this town and was classified in the World Heritage List in 1995 by UNESCO. Internet Website : la-maison-du-patrimoine.org

Le type de Louang Prabang, lui-même divisé en deux sous-groupes :
Le type 1 est une maison simple à toiture à deux pentes abritant sous ce même toit la chambre, partie fermée, et le haan, pièce de réception, plus ouverte sur le pignon de façade où arrive l’escalier ;
Le type 2 n’est qu’une modification du type 1 après l’adjonction d’une sye, véranda (...)

Humid areas
There are humid areas which are a network of ponds dug by the inhabitants. The owners use them like gardens for raising fish and growing plants. They are alimented via a connection to the water infiltrations from the drainage basin. The plants associated with this complicated hydraulic system generate a green ‘flow’ in the centre of town.
Apart from the socio-economic and landscape aspects, the humid areas play an important role in the water management of the town : by playing the role of a holding tank, they limit the floods during the rain period, by enabling self-purifying of the water (...)
